It gained momentum in the late 1980s when an armed insurgency emerged among Sikhs demanding a separate homeland. The campaign was led by Jarnail Singh Bhindra Wale, a charismatic Sikh fundamentalist, who orchestrated violent attacks against Sikh political opponents and Hindu civilians in the name of establishing Khalistan. The Khalistan movement has been a subject of complex, evolving, and deeply emotional debates. Supporters of the movement point to historical events such as the Sikh Empire of the early 1800s as evidence that autonomous Sikh rule is possible5. However, critics argue that the movement poses a threat to India’s unity and integrity.The growing tensions between Canada and India have been attributed to various factors. One of the recent incidents that has strained bilateral ties is the alleged involvement of Indian government agents in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia1. This development has further exacerbated the situation, as India is already displeased with Canada’s perceived inaction against Sikh protesters who advocate for an independent homeland. In response, Canadian authorities have announced the expulsion of a “key Indian diplomat,” who is reportedly the head of India’s foreign intelligence agency in Canada.Trudeau’s charge was followed up by an official announcement from foreign minister Melanie Joly that Canada had expelled a senior Indian diplomat.Joly’s office said that the expelled Indian diplomat is Pavan Kumar Rai, identified by them as the head of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s foreign intelligence agency, in Canada. A 1997 batch Indian Police Service officer, he was posted to Ottawa as minister (eco, coordination, community affairs) in the Indian high commission.On the other hand  tit-for-tat move, India has expelled a senior Canadian diplomat, hours after Ottawa expelled a top Indian official as tensions escalate between the two countries over the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar earlier this year.

It is pertinent to note that Canada is home to a significant number of people of Indian origin, with approximately 1.4 million individuals identifying as Sikhs The Sikh community in Canada has been a subject of concern for India, which has accused Sikh hardliners among the Indian diaspora of attempting to revive the Khalistan separatist movement1. Tensions between the two countries have also been fueled by incidents such as a parade float depicting the 1984 assassination of then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Instead of bringing the issue cool, certain Indian Journalists are trying to pour petrol on the issue. For example, one Indian journalist says if USA can kill Osamas bin Laden in Pakistani soil,why they are crying for killing Nijjer. Another so called professor of Delhi university suggests dropping nuclear bomb in Ottawa while an old retired  civil servant claims that Canadian Prime Minster was carrying drugs in his Aeroplan.

Tensions escalate between Canada and India over killing of outspoken Sikh leader.

Canada has accused India of being linked to the murder of a Sikh leader on Canadian soil, fuelling a significant rift between the two countries. Who was the man, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, at the centre of those tensions? Hardeep Singh Nijjar was born in the district of Jalandhar in the North Indian state of Punjab. As a young man in 1997, he moved to Canada, where he married, had two sons and worked as a plumber. Settled in the province of British Columbia, he also made a name for himself as a vocal advocate for the creation of Khalistan – a separate homeland for Sikhs, who are a religious minority that makes up 2% of India’s population. He had been labelled a terrorist by India, accused of, among other activities, being the “mastermind” behind the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), a banned militant group in the country.

National security coordinator of USA says Canadian allegation are very serious. We urge India to co-operate in investigation with Canada. US ambassador to India said such allegations can troubled to any one but with active criminal investigation. He further said that killing of NIJJER in Canadian soil must be investigated. It is important to note that 5 Eyes has already provided necessary data to Canada carrying solid proofs of killing Canadian on its soil by Indian Agencies including RAW. Still, it is time to close this chapter if Indian Prime Minister Mr. Modi accept this blunder and hand over the culprits to Canadian authorities. 

Even before the announcement of this incident by Canadian Prime Minister, such rumors were heired during BRICS summit held on 15th of August,2023 in South Africa.It seems clear that Mode’s government is fully involved in Nijjer’s assassination.

It is said that authentic information about Nijjer’s assassination was provided by five eyes responsible officials and now there is no doubt that Modi’s Government planned this murder.
