With origins dating back thousands of years, Plovdiv proudly stands as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its ancient roots, coupled with its vibrant contemporary culture, make it a captivating destination for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in history, art, and tradition.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit this historic city. My journey from Luxembourg to Plovdiv was arranged with the courtesy of my brother-in-law, who was living in Poland with his Polish wife and a daughter. We both traveled from Poland to Bulgaria’s capital city, Sofia, by air and from Sofia to Plovdiv by road. This journey was really interesting and informative, but very tiring, as the distance from Luxemburg to Sofia is 1657 km. Train or bus from Sofia to Plovdiv journey of 2hours & 45 minutes The best way to get from Sofia to Plovdiv is by bus, which costs $11 – $16.
Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria, standing on the banks of the Maritsa River in the historical region of Thrace, behind the state capital Sofia. It has a population of 346,893 as of 2018 and 675,000 in the greater metropolitan area. Plovdiv is a cultural hub in Bulgaria and was the European Capital of Culture in 2019. A Journey Through Time
Plovdiv’s history is a tapestry woven with threads of civilization’s past. Founded by the Thracians in antiquity, the city, known then as Philippopolis, thrived as a strategic center for trade and culture. Later, it became a prized possession of the Roman Empire, undergoing a period of prosperity and architectural splendor. Remnants of this era, including the well-preserved Roman amphitheater and the majestic Ancient Stadium, still stand as testament to the city’s illustrious past. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Plovdiv experienced waves of conquest and cultural exchange under Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian rule. Each successive era left its mark on the city, shaping its architecture, customs, and identity. Today, Plovdiv’s Old Town, a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and colorful Revival-era houses, serves as a living museum, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past.
Cultural Crossroads
Plovdiv’s heritage as a cultural crossroads is evident in its diverse tapestry of traditions and influences. The city’s inhabitants, proud stewards of their heritage, celebrate a fusion of Bulgarian, Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman customs. From the lively folk festivals that animate the streets to the haunting melodies of traditional music echoing through the hills, Plovdiv’s cultural vitality is palpable at every turn. Artistic expression flourishes in Plovdiv, with a thriving community of painters, sculptors, and artisans contributing to its creative landscape. Galleries and studios dot the cityscape, showcasing the talent and craftsmanship of local artists. One of Plovdiv’s most iconic landmarks is its Roman amphitheater, a marvel of ancient engineering that once hosted gladiatorial contests and theatrical performances. Today, the amphitheater serves as a venue for concerts, plays, and cultural events, continuing to enrich the city’s cultural tapestry.
The Nebet Tepe hill, overlooking the city, is home to archaeological remains dating back to antiquity. Visitors can explore the ruins of ancient fortifications and temples while enjoying panoramic views of Plovdiv and the surrounding countryside.
